The majority in the Riksdag want to break a legal agreement Sweden has with Hong Kong. The 2018 agreement means that Sweden and Hong Kong will cooperate in certain criminal cases affecting both parties and, upon request, will also arrest people.
– Sweden will not help China judge people in Hong Kong, for example human rights activists, Left Party foreign policy spokesman Håkan Svenneling tells SVT News.
Together with M, C, L and KD, V has written a joint motion noting that with the new Chinese security laws it has become “obvious” that the legal system in Hong Kong is no longer independent from the Chinese government.
The motion has the support of the Swedish Democrats and therefore there is a majority to rescind the agreement.
Foreign Minister Ann Linde (S) does not want to comment on the motion, but refers to a parliamentary debate in which she said that there is no automatic obligation for Sweden in the agreement to help Hong Kong with legal assistance.
