Italy has been in mourning for the past week.
National hero Paolo Rossi, just 64 years old, died on Wednesday.
Rossi became an icon in Italy when he led the country to soccer World Cup gold in 1982, when, among other things, he defeated Diego Maradona’s Argentina en route to victory in the tournament.
– There was a lot of love around Rossi in Italy. Through World Cup gold in 1982, he was involved in uniting the country after several difficult years, Glenn Strömberg said after Rossi’s death.
During this weekend’s games in the second division Serie A and Serie B, there has been a minute of silence before kick-off to honor Rossi’s memory.
Rossi’s house ransacked during funeral
Paolo Rossi’s family had to say goodbye to “Pablito” for the last time on Saturday. The funeral was held in the Cathedral of Vicenza.
When Rossi’s widow, Federica Cappelletti, returned home after the ceremony, she made a terrible discovery: someone had broken into the home and looted valuables during the funeral.
Among the missing items is one of Paolo Rossi’s watches, reports the Italian news agency Ansa.
Currently, no one has been arrested for the robbery.
