The second day of the prosecution lasted just over four and a half hours and focused primarily on showing the audience that Donald Trump incited the storm and that his followers felt invited to the Capitol. Trump himself was not present, but is said to have played golf in West Palm Beach, Florida, according to the Daily Mail.
Diana DeGette, one of the nine Democrats leading the impeachment against Trump, went through multiple interrogations and interviews with Trump supporters who say they acted on the then president’s order. He also showed clips from a live stream of the storm where one of the people says:
– Our president wants us here … We are waiting and receiving orders from our president … He is happy, we are fighting for Trump.
– They really thought that all the intrusion was by order of the president, and we know it because they say so. They followed his instructions. They say he invited them, DeGette said.
“He can do this again”
The prosecution also stressed that the violence should have been predictable for Trump and therefore could have been prevented. They highlighted several occasions when they believe Trump was tolerant or even incited violence early in his term, such as the 2017 demonstrations in Charlottesville. Knowledge of the violent capital of his supporters was with Trump, the prosecution said. Still, it took some time before he did anything to stop the perpetrators.
“Trump’s lack of remorse afterwards shows that he wanted it to happen,” said one of the prosecutors, Ted Lieu.
Says violence can happen again.
– I’m not afraid that Trump will run in the 2024 presidential election and win. I’m afraid he will line up and lose. Because you can do this again, says Ted Lieu.
Trump supporters did other things
Florida Republican Sen. Rick Scott, who has been singled out as a strong Trump supporter, has blatantly avoided viewing the featured videos and sat down Thursday with a blank map of Asia. According to reporters at the scene, he appeared to fill the countries and cities on the map rather than participate in the prosecutor’s information, the Washington Post reports.
Missouri Senator Roy Blunt, in turn, was late and missed the prosecutor’s inauguration.
Senators Lindsey Graham, Ted Cruz and Mike Lee are said to have met with Trump’s defense attorneys after the prosecutor’s review Thursday. According to Trump’s attorney David Schoen, the senators wanted to familiarize themselves with the defense procedure, reports CNN.
