Austria, Czech Republic and Hungary. Several Central European countries managed smoothly in the first wave.
But with the new record highs and infection curves pointing upward, there’s a warning that a second wave could hit them harder.
– The situation has deteriorated dramatically here, says Emma Lovén Svensson, a reporter on the site in the Czech Republic.
Austria has reported 850 new cases in one week. More than double the number of cases compared to the previous two weeks.
– What we are experiencing right now is the beginning of the second wave. The number of infections is increasing every day, it says in a statement to the Austrian news agency APA.
The country has previously been spared large outbreaks and only 750 deaths. However, due to the increasing spread of the infection, the government has now tightened the rules on oral protection.
Starting Monday, everyone should cover their mouth and nose inside all public stores and buildings, not just grocery stores and public transportation.
Celebrate “goodbye to covid” with a great party
The Czech Republic also broke a new record for the number of new cases per week: more than 1,100 new cases in one day. Prague has risen up the Belgian quarantine list, and according to the EU infection control agency, the country is one of the European countries where the infection has increased the most in the past two weeks.
– The situation has deteriorated dramatically in recent weeks. Last Friday, we had the biggest list in one day, says Emma Lovén Svensson, a reporter for Aftonbladet on the site.
The increased fall of the crown is a setback for the Czech Republic, which has previously been hailed as one of the best-successful European countries with its crown. The restrictions were introduced from the beginning, including requirements for oral protection. The country has had few infections and a maximum death toll of 14 people in one day.
– They received a lot of praise for their strategy. Now they have been relieved over the summer and there is concern, says Emma Lovén Svensson
Earlier this summer, when the country lifted its restrictions, a covid19 farewell party was held on a bridge in Prague, attended by 2,000 people.
But now mouth protection requirements are being reintroduced and extended to all stores, restaurants, and all public transportation, including taxis. Restaurants and bars are forced to close at midnight.
Prime Minister: due to increased evidence
However, the government believes that part of the increase is due to increased testing and tracking of infections.

In Hungary, there is a sharp increase in the spread of the infection.
Hungary has seen 50 new cases a day during the summer. But during August, new infection records were broken and on Monday, there were 576 cases reported in one day.
Prime Minister Víctor Orbán has said that a new wave is imminent and has responded by closing the country’s borders so as not to import new cases. Hungarians returning from other countries must be quarantined for 14 days.
For Europe as a whole, the infection curve points sharply upward and is approaching the peak of the first wave, a WHO report shows. However, the death toll is at a much lower level compared to last spring. The countries with the greatest spread of the infection are Spain and France.
