Several opposition politicians in Tanzania have been arrested, of whom Freeman Mbowe, leader of the Chadema party is one, ahead of planned protests against the outcome of Wednesday’s elections, which the opposition believes was manipulated.
– We arrested four people, including Freeman Mbowe, last night and this morning we arrested three others, says Lazaro Mambosasa, police chief of the big city of Dar es Salaam.
-We arrested them during a meeting to organize the protests, which were already prohibited, he continues.
According to official election results, incumbent President John Magufuli received 84 percent of the votes and his party won 97 percent of the seats in parliament.
Few foreign election observers were in place during the elections and most foreign media were denied coverage on the mainland.
Mbowe and other opposition groups have called for national demonstrations and demanded that new elections be held.
