A Linköping doctor operated on the wrong organ of a patient. Now the doctor receives criticism from the Swedish Health and Care Inspectorate (Ivo), writes Corren.
The incident occurred in January of this year, when the doctor was going to operate on a kidney with the wrong kidney and instead operated on a patient’s spleen. The error was only discovered the day after the operation and led the affected woman to have to undergo a new operation in which the kidney was removed.
According to the newspaper, the doctor has stated that the circumstances surrounding the operation were not optimal and that he had to replace a colleague close to the operation. Ivo is now criticizing the doctor for not making sure the correct organ was removed. Following the investigation, the hospital has taken steps to prevent a repeat of the incident.
