Volvo Cars slows down when it comes to the production of cars with internal combustion engines. By 2030, only electric cars will be sold. Models should only be sold through online purchases.

The new business strategy is an update on a previous goal that by 2025, half of Volvo’s car fleet will be pure electric cars and other variants called hybrids.
– We can say that more and more people are positive about electrification and I am completely convinced that development will go faster and faster. That is why we are now pushing our ambitions forward, says CEO Håkan Samuelsson in connection with a press conference this morning.
A change of system
Volvo Cars is now far from alone in the system change. American electric car maker Tesla has been very successful in recent years, and more and more gamers have followed suit. Volkswagen has launched several electric cars and two weeks ago the American car giant Ford announced that it will invest a billion dollars in a factory in Cologne, Germany, with the intention that all sales in Europe in 2030 will only consist of electric cars.
However, one challenge is the charging infrastructure itself. Tesla has relied on its own charging network, while BMW, Volkswagen and several other players have joined forces in a charging network, Ionity. According to Håkan Samuelsson, something like this is more relevant than your own Volvo network.
– It is in the long term what I think clients are asking for. I don’t usually refuel at a gas station chain, but refuel where a gas station appears.
When asked if the change in the exchange rate does not mean a loss of market share worldwide, Samuelsson responds:
– We do not expect to lose any market. Then it will go at different speeds. The first to switch to electric cars are the ones with their own charging options, and if you live in the north, you’ll probably be the last to switch to pure electricity.
Simplified purchase process
For future customers, the purchase process itself must also change. Starting with model year 2022, all electric cars will only be sold through the Volvo website. According to Håkan Samuelsson, by mainly offering a series of predefined models, it should be possible to reduce the waiting time and simplify the process itself.
– Now it can be perceived as complicated and many do not realize that there are 50 different solutions. This will increase the opportunity for us and the retailers to be more efficient, says Håkan Samuelsson.
“There is no long-term future for cars with internal combustion engines. We are firmly dedicated to becoming an exclusive manufacturer of electric cars and that change should be possible by 2030. It will allow us to meet customer expectations and be a part of the solution when it comes to fighting the climate, “said Henrik Green, technical manager at Volvo Cars, in the press release.
