Two-thirds of the population participated in Slovakia’s mass testing program this weekend. Just over one percent of those tested tested positive.
As the first country in the world, Slovakia has started testing the entire population for coronavirus. Approximately 45,000 health workers, as well as the military and police, carry it out.
Test samples are collected from around 5,000 test stations. It is an antigen test, a type of rapid test with responses in a few minutes.
Prime Minister Igor Matovic says 3.6 million residents, two-thirds of the population, were screened this weekend. A total of 38,359 people tested positive for the virus, just under 1.1 percent of all those tested, and are in quarantine for ten days.
“I truly believe that this solution will work for Slovakia as long as those who receive confirmation that they are negative continue to act responsibly and those who have received a positive result remain in quarantine with their families,” Matovic told a news conference. .
Children under the age of ten are excluded from the program. It is itself voluntary for adults, but anyone who is detained by the police and cannot show a negative test result runs the risk of being fined and must be quarantined.
