Oman has appointed an ambassador to Syria, as the first Gulf state to do so since diplomatic relations deteriorated in 2012 at the start of the Syrian civil war. So large parts of the world reacted to the brutal response of the Syrian regime to the initial protests.
Oman is one of the few Arab countries that has maintained diplomatic relations with the Bashar al-Assad regime, despite pressure from the United States and allied countries in the region. However, as regime forces took back much of the country in recent years and consolidated their power with the help of Russia and Iran, more Arab countries have cautiously approached Damascus.
In addition to Oman, Bahrain has also kept its embassy in Syria open. In late 2018, the United Arab Emirates, which has supported rebel groups in the Syrian civil war, reopened its mission in the country.
On Sunday, the Syrian foreign minister approved the credentials of Omani ambassador Turkey bin Mahmood al-Busaidy, according to Oman’s state news agency Ona.
