– It has been a year full of setbacks in which sadly I have not managed to do enough to keep the club in the Allsvenskan, says Mellberg in a comment on the Helsingborgs IF website.
He continues:
– It is with great disappointment and sadness that I realize that we have been demoted to Superettan. If we had managed to get through this difficult period and have managed to stay, I think we could have aimed high at Allsvenskan 2021. Now, instead, it will be a new start at Superettan and then I think it’s better if someone else takes over.
Former national team midfielder took over as coach at Helsingborg in early September 2019.
Then he also signed a 2.5-year contract.
– Despite the negative results, we have had positive energy within the association, many thanks to all the Olympia staff, the strong support of the fans (unfortunately, mostly from distance) and a team of players and staff who fought hard until the end. I would like to thank the board for the trust and good cooperation and I would also like to extend a special thanks to the citizens of Helsingborg for a warm reception and care in the city during the year that I have been here. I have met a lot of great people who I am looking forward to and I think there will soon be a fully Swedish team in town again, says Olof Mellberg.
Outgoing president Krister Azelius comments on Mellberg’s decision:
– We have all the respect for Olof’s decision and the responsibility he assumes. Despite being a sporting failure, it has helped us lay the foundation for a more professional business around our A-team and of course we are grateful for that. We want to thank Olof for the good collaboration and the work he has done for the club.
Olof Mellberg’s last game as HIF coach will be Sunday’s Allsvenskan season against IFK Norrköping.
