After the victory against American Justin Gaethje on Saturday night Swedish time, Chabib Nurmagomedov said it was his last match.
– This was my last fight. I don’t want to do this without my dad, said a very excited winner immediately after the game.
– When the UFC called about the Justin fight, I spoke to my mother. I said I wouldn’t fight without my father. And if I give my word, I must keep it.
Nurmagomedov’s father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, 32, died in July 2020, aged 57, from complications from contracting the coronavirus.
The fight ended after a minute and a half when Gaethje clapped his hands. The referee did not immediately see him and Gaethje had passed out when Nurmagomedov released him. Immediately afterwards, the Russian burst into tears on the carpet and was consoled by the opponent.
– Thank you my brother. You are a good man. I know that you take care of those around you. Take care of your parents, you never know what will happen tomorrow, the winner told Gaethje after the game.
– He did what was required, he’s so strong. I know he made his father proud, Gaethje said after the game.
