Now the arctic cold is sweeping Sweden

A lot of snow and a lot of cold, now winter is really approaching all of Sweden. On Sunday, snowfall is expected, with even more to come Monday night. So it can be really difficult in Västernorrland, among other places.

On Sunday, snow will fall over much of the country, although it can turn into both rain and wet snow in the far south.

– Cloudy afternoon weather follows, and there are chances of sunshine in southern parts, says Linus Karlsson, meteorologist on duty at SMHI.

The temperature on Sunday remains around zero in the center and south of the country, but higher in the north there are degrees less.

More snow is expected across the country on Monday.

– A new precipitation zone is moving across the country, in Götaland and Svealand, and partly over Norrland. We also get a bit warmer air, so snowfall can turn into rain all over Götaland and Svealand.

In the north, however, it will be colder, and heavy snowfall can cause a lot of snow in Västernorrland during Monday afternoon and into Tuesday evening.

– We have issued a risk of heavy snowfall over Norrland, with a few decimeters of snow. It can reach up to four decimeters in Västernorrland.

SMHI has not yet warned according to its alert system, but it can come. Warnings are issued 24 hours in advance.

– It will also be windy, with the risk of a strong drift formation.

On Monday there will be more degrees in the south, but a few or a few degrees less in the north. Although we will not be so hot in the future.

– The coldest air descends from the Arctic and it is colder during the week. The temperature will drop significantly, says Linus Karlsson.

Both Götaland and Svealand get negative grades, in some places really a lot.

– It will be between minus one and minus five degrees in Götaland, and it will drop to minus ten in many places in Svealand.

The cold is due to a meteorological phenomenon called sudden stratospheric warming, says Linus Karlsson.

In short, this means that the cold air trapped over the Arctic is moving south. The air at higher altitudes warms up and this changes the winds so that the cold air is not held over the Arctic.

The cold thus “escapes” to the south due to the direction of the wind, so it can continue for a long time.

– Yes, this year there is a battle between hot and cold. Now the fresh air has taken over.

For hot air to enter, a low pressure is required to challenge the cold air mass and sweep away warmer contents. But this is not expected to happen in the next ten days, for which SMHI makes forecasts.

– We must be prepared for continuous cold, says Linus Karlsson.
