It was in Saturday’s under-21 match between Frisk Asker and Lörenskog that Mats Hildisch came free against the goal and an opponent dropped him on the ice. Hildisch unhappily crashed into Lörenskog’s goal with his head forward and fell on the ice.

The match was canceled and the 18-year-old was transferred to Ullevål hospital. The hockey talent had surgery the night before Sunday and now the club announces that doctors have been able to establish that Hildisch suffered a serious back injury that led to paralysis.

The Norwegian newspaper Budstikka spoke with Nicolay Sörensen, the head of Frisk Asker.

– It is a terribly tragic and unreal situation. We are all in shock. He’s been a healthy guy all these years. Since he first skated until now, says Sörensen.

– The most important thing for us is to be there for the family and offer our support. We hope Mats is the best it can be.

Coach Vidar Wold witnessed the incident on the spot in the hall and wants to emphasize that it was not an irregular action by the Lörenskog players that caused the accident.

– It is something that happens in hockey, but the result is terribly sad. There is absolutely nothing ugly, Wold tells Budstikka.

Frisk Asker writes on his website that Mats Hildisch will be staying in Ullevål hospital for the rest of the week and will then be transferred to Sunnaas hospital for rehabilitation.

Mats Hildisch has played several A-team matches for Frisk Asker, who plays in the Norwegian top league, and also represented the Norwegian youth national team.
