North Korean dictator: our plan has failed

When the 7,000 or so participants gathered for the congress, they may have expected a more optimistic tone from the man at the top of the country’s hierarchy, Kim Jong-Un.

But in the speech, which has been broadcast through the state news agency KCNA, Kim affirmed that the country has also failed to achieve the goals set at the last congress in 2016.

In-depth analysis

That five-year plan was scrapped last year and the leader now says that:

– We will carry out an in-depth analysis (and review) of our experiences and what lessons we can learn from the mistakes we have made.

KCNA does not report details on the errors Kim is referring to. He also shouldn’t have mentioned anything about the relationship with Washington or Seoul, but he praised the country’s work on developing short- and long-range ballistic robots, which was described as a “miraculous victory.”

Changes in the leadership layer

The congress will last a few more days and Kim is expected to announce a series of leadership changes.

Analysts and kremlinologists who, as in the days of the Soviet Union, try to interpret who is entering or leaving the innermost core of power, noted that Kim Jong-Un was accompanied on the podium by his sister Kim Yo-Jong, the ceremonial head of state Choe Ryong-Hae and Prime Minister Kim Tok-Hun when he began the eighth congress in the country’s history.
