44 percent of the male population in North Korea are smokers. So does the country’s leader, Kim Jong-Un, who is often seen with a cigarette in his hand.

Now, the Supreme People’s Assembly of North Korea has introduced a tobacco law that bans smoking in certain public places. The places affected are theaters and cinemas, but also centers for political education and health.

The places have been selected to offer the inhabitants of the country “hygienic living environments”. But the Tobacco Law also aims to protect the health of citizens, strengthening legal and social control over the production and sale of cigarettes, The Guardian reports, citing North Korean state media KCNA.

In the fall of 2020, North Korea’s arms trade was revealed on the black market.
