Norrtälje Hospital, which is run by care company Tiohundra AB, was expecting just over 700 doses of COVID-19 vaccine. Due to administration problems, only a total of 400 doses have been administered.
The region commissioned the hospital to develop a priority list of personnel who need to be vaccinated. At the top were staff from, among other things, the intensive care unit and the emergency room, according to the hospital’s chief physician.
Despite being up to a thousand people work at the hospital, and there were only just over 400 doses to administer, cleaners, administrative staff, and security guards were also offered a covid-19 vaccine.
– Of course, we have prioritized intensive care personnel, in the emergency department and in covid rooms, those who have the most contact with suspected covid patients. In addition to the peripheral staff that works there, and then has come with janitors, managers who sit inside the units, secretaries, and even security guards.
– But the guards did not end up at the top of the queue, rather at the top are the staff of the intensive care unit and the emergency room, among other things.
But the decision to offer Vaccines for guards, among others, have drawn criticism. Among other things, with health personnel in another health clinic in the municipality, the Norrtälje health center.
– It’s a matter of life and death. Of course our staff wonder why they should be on the forefront of inadequate protection while their friends, as well as the administrative staff at the hospital next door, had already been vaccinated two weeks ago. This completely breaks our work ethic, says Gustav Soler, specialist physician and founder of Prosalus, who, among other things, runs the Norrtälje health center.
DN has also been in contact with other Prosalus staff who criticize the fact that people who do not work as healthcare personnel have been offered vaccinations.
– Patients call us and want to be vaccinated. And then they hear that hospital guards or janitors get vaccinated. I understand that it sends signals that are difficult to interpret in these patients, who are among those who most need this vaccine, says another doctor who wishes to remain anonymous.
Municipalities and regions of Sweden is not aware of other cases where municipalities or regions are conducting vaccine handling research, in addition to a number of cases in Eskilstuna where elderly care managers, among other things, have offered vaccines to members of the family, and now it is the case in Norrtälje.
The Stockholm Region has now launched an investigation against Tiohundra AB due to the company’s handling of vaccines. The region also confirms that it is the only activity in the region that is being investigated in regards to vaccine management.
The region’s vaccine coordinator, Magnus Thyberg, emphasizes that all activities must follow the order of priority recommended by the Swedish Public Health Agency.
Is it wrong that a vaccine is offered to the guards before the care personnel of the same municipality do it?
– The order of priority is clear. Start with the most fragile elderly and those closest to these patients. Then we have the vaccination of certain health professionals. It is the order of priority that is applied. So I don’t know which base to use when vaccinating different individuals, like these guards.
