The president-elect of the United States, Joe Biden, will appoint Judge Merrick Garland as the country’s justice minister, several media outlets report, citing internal sources.
Former President Barack Obama nominated Garland to the United States Supreme Court in 2016, following the death of Justice Antonin Scalia. But the Republicans, who controlled the Senate, put a stop to this and refused to approve Obama’s election.
The decision was postponed, upon the presidential election of the same year, after which Obama’s Republican successor, Donald Trump, had a choice. He then named the more conservative Neil Gorsuch, in one of a total of three Trump elections that completely changed the balance in the US Supreme Court.
