No electricity for several Gotlanders after a break

Several Gotland residents are without power, following a major power outage that initially affected the entire island. Only at 4.30 pm is energy expected to return for everyone, says Gotlands Energi (Geab).

The connection between the island and the mainland was cut off at 2 p.m. Friday, according to Geab.

– We have technicians on site and troubleshooting is in full swing. In parallel, we use the power reserve we have on Gotland. With his help, we are trying to return power to customers as soon as possible, Kalle Blomberg, CEO of Geab, tells TT.

At first, the entire island was without power, but about an hour after the blackout, some 3,000 subscribers regained power. At 4.30 pm, the power is expected to return for everyone.

This is far from the first time the people of Gotlan have experienced a power outage.

At the latest in early July, the island was left without electricity due to problems with the connection to the mainland. Even several years earlier, Gotland had lost power after a blackout. In 2019, five outages were reported, and the year before there were a total of 13, says Kalle Blomberg.

– We had a lot of power outages in 2018, it’s based on the fact that a very extensive upgrade and rebuild of this connection was done, says Kalle Blomberg.

So far this year, there have been three outages.

– Exactly what was the cause this time, remains to be seen. We focus on getting clients back to power as soon as possible, and then we investigate the cause and draw lessons.
