In Swedish hockey, neck protection is a hot topic of discussion.

But during the JVM there is no compulsion and many in the Junior Crowns skipped it in the premiere against the Czech Republic.

– My personal opinion is that you should have it, says the captain of the national team Joel Rönnmark.

Inadequate neck protection has led to some high-profile fines at the SHL. But under the JVM, there is no obligation as it is subject to the regulations of the International Ice Hockey Federation.

In the premiere against the Czech Republic, several of the Swedish players chose to skip the neck protection, which was noticed by readers in Sportbladet’s live reports about the match, and on social media.

– We only follow the rules that have been established. In Sweden they are very strict and then it is important to respect that and I understand that perfectly, says team captain Philip Broberg, every day at Skellefteå.

“Individually”

Federation captain Joel Rönnmark says he has not reflected on the fact that some players choose not to wear neck protection, but thinks this is something that should be used.

– I think you should have it, that’s my personal opinion. It is an important protection. But it is individual and as long as we do not break any rules, he says.

Sweden won the JVM debut against the Czech Republic 7-1, where Elmer Söderblom scored a dream goal.
