NEW YORK. For the first time in 27 years, the New York Islanders are ready for the conference finals in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
They won Game 7 tonight against surprisingly pale Philadelphia 4-0.
– We deserve it, says veteran defender and unexpected scorer Andy Greene.
It was never particularly exciting, the directly decisive game that ended the second round of the ongoing pandemic playoffs in Toronto and Edmonton.
The New York Islanders played their best game in the series and the Philadelphia Flyers, who seemed to have used up all the fuel of the two immediately preceding islets, the worst and the result was already felt when the Long Island team climbed to a lead of 2-0 in the first period.
Very true.
After another goal in the middle and one on the empty net in the third, Anders Lee & co won 4-0 and now have to move up to the conference final against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
– I will not lie: We were very excited before this game and I think we played very well. We deserve to move on, says veteran Andy Greene, who scored the second goal of the game.
This is the first time since 1993 that the Islanders have made it this far in the playoffs, and they haven’t been to the final since Wayne Gretzky’s dynasty against Edmonton ended 36 years ago.
Oskar Lindblom, who has just returned from cancer last winter, also played tonight’s game and did so well that coach Alain Vigneault gave him plenty of time on the ice during a desperate push at the end.
He also impressed Islanders coach Barry Trotz. Before asking questions at his press conference after the final signal, he gave a short tribute speech in honor of Oskar.
– It has been exceptional and inspiring to see Oskar Lindblom return after everything that has happened. I also applaud the Flyers for the way they helped and supported him, it was called.
However, the Flyers are done playing and now they have to leave the bubble and go home to Philadelphia.
