Rocket launch, house party, or reserving a table at a restaurant – how should you really think about celebrating New Years this year?
Aftonbladet has spoken with two experts about what is most suitable.
– The new year will not make any difference from the Christmas weekend, says Yngve Gustafson, professor of geriatrics.
With just over three weeks until Christmas, the Swedish Public Health Agency has yet to announce what advice and recommendations to expect, a message that is not expected to arrive until next week.
It is also unclear what will apply before the New Year.
Aftonbladet has contacted two experts who give their opinion on the upcoming celebration and the twelfth beat.

What kind of New Year’s celebration do you recommend?
– That you celebrate at home with those you would go out with. Alternatively, celebrate together in zoom or similar so you can celebrate with several. My family had a 70th anniversary celebration tonight, it was so nice!
Should you cancel entirely or can you host a smaller house party or dinner for a couple?
– It is completely inappropriate to meet in larger circles because that is where the risk of spreading the infection is greatest. We all have to fight a little more while we wait for the vaccine.
But is it okay to go out to eat at a restaurant? Have a drink in a bar?
– No, if I had to decide, we would close all those opportunities for a few weeks because we have not yet managed to stop the spread of the infection, unlike many other European countries. We have no idea what the new year will be like, but based on how it looks today, I’m not very hopeful about how it will be in four weeks. If we don’t do something more radical, NOW!
What should you think about common activities like rocket launching, for example?
– Skip it entirely, I think. Healthcare is already so congested, so we shouldn’t risk further injury.

What kind of New Years celebration do you recommend?
– The New Year will not make any difference to the Christmas weekend. Celebrate the New Year with the people you live with. Unfortunately, we also have to take into account the restrictions throughout 2021, so it will be too long for the summer party, which you can have outdoors.
Should you cancel altogether, or can you host a smaller house party or dinner for a couple?
– If you have been away for Christmas and holidays, if you have lived in quarantine, you can possibly invite a couple of close relatives or a couple of good friends who also lived in quarantine. Some good friends have done digital cooking and then digital dinners together, maybe something worth trying over the Christmas and New Years weekend. Install a computer at one end of the dining room table so that you can also reduce the social isolation of at-risk groups.
But is it okay to go out to eat at a restaurant? Have a drink in a bar?
– It is probably possible to find some restaurants where you can eat together in a small group if you have even lived in quarantine yourself and those with whom you eat have also done so. I myself think that eight people, which is the maximum number recommended by the Swedish Public Health Agency, is too much.
– Many restaurants also offer “chambre separee”. But I think hanging the bar should be completely avoided.

– As a dog owner, I think I should avoid it entirely, but fireworks can be seen from a distance.
