It’s been a blue and yellow podium party at the world cup premiere in Finland this weekend. First, Johanna Skottheim drove third in the women’s distance race on Saturday and then the men, through Sebastian Samuelsson and Martin Ponsiluoma, took second and third in Sunday’s sprint.

Women’s sprint?

It was a performance by Hanna Öberg.

The 25-year-old, who had never won a sprint competition before, was fast as the wind on the tracks, shot hard and finished almost 24 seconds ahead of reigning world sprint champion Marte Olsbu Röiseland.

– I am very pleased. I opened quite strong outside the stadium and got receipts. It feels great, says Hanna Öberg and continues:

– Today I felt safe on the embankment. I set a goal for the season I wanted to be a part of and be able to fight for a sprint victory. I am very pleased.

Behind that, Johanna Skottheim and Mona Brorsson impressed, both in the top five at the time of writing.

Norway’s Karoline Offigstad Knotten is third.

Reigning overall cup champion of Italy Dorothea Wierer blocked a shot on the first shot and finished outside the top 20.

Tiril Eckhoff, Norway, also had a rough day and already fired on the initial pitch, three booms.
