The government is concerned that many do not take the risk of infection seriously.
– More bans are needed to reduce the curve on the number of infected, says Prime Minister Stefan Löfven (S)
The government announces that public events and public gatherings with more than eight participants are prohibited.
The amendment to the ordinance, which is based on the Public Order Law, will take effect on November 24 and will run for four weeks.
– This is a very intrusive measure, but absolutely necessary, says Löfven.
The spread of the infection has deteriorated rapidly in recent weeks.
As recently as October 22, the government decided to relax the ban on public gatherings and public events for more than 50 people.
Exceptions were made, for example, for theaters, concerts, cinemas, and sporting events with seats. In such cases, up to 300 people were allowed with a certain distance between them.
The exception will certainly remain, but in practice it does not matter that all regions of the country have been limited to the lower limit of 50 people. And that ceiling has now been lowered from 50 to eight people.
The exception is eliminated for restaurants with artists who entertain diners. Since October 8, these restaurants have had a seated audience that exceeds the audience limit. But as of November 24 it will be practically impossible to invite diners to live music, since then only eight people will be able to attend.
The government hopes that the new eight-person roof for public gatherings and public events will become a norm for society as a whole. However, the government cannot ban private parties and large private dinners.
– This is the new norm for the whole of society, says Löfven.
– It is a very clear signal for all the people of our country and for all of society.
The rules for visiting restaurants have already been tightened. No more than eight people are allowed to sit at the same table.
As recently as last week, the government proposed to stop serving alcohol in the pub after 10 p.m. The stop is expected to go into effect on November 20 and run until the last month of February.
