New scenario on the spread of the infection: culmination is reached in mid-December

The Swedish Public Health Agency has developed a new scenario for how the spread of the infection is believed to unfold in Sweden. It is based on a mathematical model of cases reported through November 6 and runs through March 2021.

Depending on the scenario, the peak of the infection’s spread is expected to be reached in just over two weeks.

– Even if we see a reversal of the spread of the infection in mid-December, it is far from over. We must respect the restrictions and advice that apply. We have a long, long way to go, says the agency’s CEO Johan Carlson during a press conference.

In the age group 0-19 years, the spread of infection is already at its peak.

– We have good hopes of being able to influence development, but I want to emphasize that it is a mathematical model that requires us to have a full impact on the measures taken.

No news about Christmas

The news that the culmination will soon be reached should not be seen, as the Swedes will be able to celebrate Christmas as usual. The Swedish Public Health Agency has promised to announce Christmas trips next week, but Johan Carlson already says the agency will take a restrictive stance to ease restrictions.

– It is not the case that as soon as we overcome the top we can release the restrictions. Exactly how we will formulate, we will return to, but the message is a very restrictive attitude.

According to Anders Tegnell, who spoke at a subsequent press conference, the eight-person maximum rule in public gatherings will continue.

– Probably a little late in January.

Tegnell on ski trips: no travel ban

When it comes to ski trips this Christmas, Anders Tegnell said that they are working on an agreement with the ski resorts, but that it is not relevant with the travel ban.

– The assessment so far that a total travel ban is not needed. It will be possible to travel, but it must be done very responsibly, Tegnell said.

More information on ski trips will arrive on Thursday next week.

Rapid tests should be used in healthcare

During the press conference, the Swedish Public Health Agency also announced a new guide on rapid tests for covid-19. The idea is that this type of test, which can give answers in as little as 15 minutes, can be used in elderly care and healthcare.

– Rapid tests allow finding more infected, but that cannot rule out disease. Additional testing may be needed, says Karin Tegmark Wisell, continuing:

– Tests should be used with caution.
