In Sweden, playing ice hockey without a neck guard is prohibited, and the SHL has taken a heavy toll on players who have been careless, but when the Junior Crowns won the JVM premiere, many were uncovered.
The neck protection requirement is a controversial issue in Swedish ice hockey and a dozen players have been fined during the current SHL season for misusing the protection.
The compulsion was introduced as early as 1995 when Bengt Åkerblom de Mora put a skate on his neck and died at the age of 28. But due to the fact that the protection was not used at all or that the players made the construction of the house that feels more comfortable but does not protect, they have been forced to tighten.
A first offense gives a fine of 5.00 euros, if you get caught again the amount doubles to 1000 euros. It’s the roof.
At the JVM premiere against the Czech Republic, which Sweden won 7-1, it was several Swedish players who decided to play without a neck guard.
According to the rules of the International Ice Hockey Federation, there is no requirement to wear protection.
– We only follow the rules that have been established. SHL is strict on that and then it is important to respect it and I fully understand it. So there’s probably nothing else, says Juniorkronorna’s team captain Philip Broberg.
Federation Captain Joel Rönnmark believes there are reasons to wear neck protection.
– There is no rule, so I have not reflected on how it looks. I think you should have a neck guard, that’s my personal opinion. It is an important protection. But it’s individual and as long as you don’t break any rules like that, he says.
