New rules for Finnish stock dividends

When you want to recover the excess part of the tax, you have to wait another year, because you have to apply to the Finnish tax authority for the money to be paid. But you can only do that after waiting a year.

– You must return the excess part of the 20 percent tax, that is, the difference between 15 and 35 percent, to the Finnish tax authority Vero. But this can be done in January 2022 at the earliest for dividends during the year 2021, says Ann Marie Karlsson, business manager of Swedbank’s customer center in an article about Swedbank and Savings Bank investment site Aktiell.

Many are affected

Many Swedish shareholders are affected by the changes, mainly because Nordea is now based in Helsinki, he says.

If you have Finnish shares in a VP account, in a custodial account, in ISK or in an individual pension savings (IPS), you will be particularly affected by the new rules. In that case, you have to pay full Finnish tax withholding on all dividends from Finnish companies during the year. The tax is 35 percent. Then you must request a refund of the excess.

If, on the other hand, you have endowment insurance, pension insurance, endowment pension or occupational pension, you do not need to do anything yourself due to the new legislation in Finland, as the insurance company manages it by you.

“There may be several companies”

The following table shows the stocks that are currently in the Swedbank system and that are affected by the new rules. The table was created on Tuesday, March 2, but can be expanded.

– Certainly there may be additional companies that are affected, but that are not in our systems or with our clients, says Caroline Söderberg, Business Analyst, Wealth & Investment Services, Swedbank, to Privata Affärer.
