A few weeks ago, there was some hope that the virus situation would start to improve in the Jönköping region.
But in recent weeks, the statistical curves have shattered those hopes. Both the number of new confirmed cases and the number of samples taken were higher last week than ever during the pandemic.
– There is still a high proportion of positive tests. The figure is around 14 percent, it can be said that it is a high proportion and one of the highest in the country, says Malin Bengnér at a press conference.
The reason for the high spread of the infection in the region is a bit difficult to pin down, according to Malin Bengnér. However, it is likely to affect that Jönköping tops the list for the proportion of cases that make up the variant of the virus that was first discovered in the UK.
– We don’t have a simple explanation, but we have a very high proportion of the British virus variant, we had a proportion of 84 percent for week 10. I think it affects, she says.
– Almost all regions are above 50 percent and many are between 70 and 80 percent. So we do not stand out too much, but we are still at the top of those who have that variant of virus the most.
The high spread of the infection means that medical care in the region is now preparing for even more places of care.
– Considering the increase, we see in front of us that in a week or two we will have an additional burden, says Agneta Ståhl, who is director of health care.
– It is a challenge ahead and, therefore, we are preparing to open more care places.
