For the first time since the start of the pandemic, Germany has reported more than a thousand deaths from covid-19 in one day, a total of 1,129 people, according to the Robert Koch Institute.
To date, the virus has claimed the lives of 32,200 Germans.
Germany, with some 83 million inhabitants, emerged this spring as a good example in Europe, with a relatively low spread of infection and low mortality rates. The picture has changed during the fall and winter, with a sharp increase in infection and new highs in the number of deaths at frequent intervals.
There are also calls for help from the country’s intensive care units.
According to Health Minister Jens Spahn, Chancellor Angela Merkel’s party colleague, the return to normality has not been relevant for some time.
– Infection and death rates show that normality is still a long way off, he says at a press conference in Berlin, according to the AFP news agency.
– I do not see how we can return to life before closing while the situation seems, continues.
Merkel, like other world leaders, has warned that January and February will be difficult months.
