New protests in Minsk: masked police take women away

The protests in Belarus have been several weeks after leader Alexander Lukashenko declared himself the winner.

Since then, violent images have spread around the world, and new demonstrations will take place in Minsk on Sunday.

Images from the capital show masked police officers taking one woman away and taking another to a nearby car, SVT writes.

In another clip circulating in Twitter another person is seen being taken away by masked policemen.

– We have seen demonstrations for several weeks and it is obvious that the movement refuses to give in, says Martin Uggla, president of the Eastern Group that works for democracy and human rights in Eastern Europe.

Several arrested after new protests in Belarus

According to AFP Police have stated that about 250 people were arrested on Sunday. Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets of the capital to demonstrate, according to the news agency.

According to SVT, the police are armed, among other things, with water cannons and several roads have been blocked to prevent protesters from advancing.

Martin Uggla says that the protesters’ demands are that political prisoners be released, that the violence cease and that a new democratic presidential election be held.

Since the elections, the protests have only gotten stronger, says Uggla.

– It is quite a desperate action by the regime. There is no other way to stop this than to use force again. Of course, it is very worrying as many people get into trouble.

He added that the protesters had been careful to protest peacefully.

– If you manage to maintain that discipline, there is no reason for the regime to act more brutally.
