New parasite behind mysterious diarrheal disease in Denmark

Diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, fever, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue. These are some of the symptoms that Danish employees have experienced during the fall.

In October, a Copenhagen company reported more than 70 cases of severe and prolonged diarrhea among its employees.

On Wednesday, the Statens Whey Institute announced in a press release that, together with the Danish Food Administration, they are now investigating the outbreak of the disease.

“The Statens Serum Institut has so far found samples from 11 people who are positive for Enterocytozoon bieneusi, which is a species of microsporidia. It is not a microorganism that we often discover in Denmark and we have not seen disease outbreaks with it before. “, SSI writes in the press release.

“Attentive patients”

SSI suspects that the infection was through food.

“The infection occurs through the feces of infected people with poor hygiene towards other people, either directly or through food and drink”, write SSI.

To date, no other cases of people infected with the virus have been detected outside the company, according to Lasse Skafte Vestergaard, SSI ward physician.

– We urge the nation’s doctors to care for patients with prolonged diarrhea without obvious cause. Especially when it comes to people with weakened immune systems and particularly long-lasting symptoms, Lasse Skafte Vestergaard says in the press release.
