At 8:00 p.m. local time, Prime Minister Boris Johnson addressed the British people. The new British mutation, which Johnson says is 60-70 percent more contagious, has caused the spread of the infection to appear. Health care is under greater pressure than ever in the pandemic, he said.
“If nothing is done, the British healthcare system will collapse within 21 days,” Johnson said in the speech.
That is why Britain is entering a difficult new period of national lockdown.
“The government is now telling him to stay home,” Johnson said.
Schools are closed
Among other things, the foundation and upper secondary schools will be closed. Johnson believes that schools are not necessarily the driving force behind the spread of the infection, but that they can help spread the disease between homes.
“Why, you wonder, haven’t we closed schools before?” Johnson asked rhetorically.
– We have done our best to keep schools open because we know what each individual day is like for a child’s education, we know that it is not the worst environment for the spread of infection, but the school can still affect the spread of infection between households.
Those businesses are closing
• All unnecessary personal or retail care (former hairdresser)
• Restaurants may continue to deliver alcohol to go, but not to go.
Zoos and other animal attractions will be closed.
• Outdoor team sports are not allowed except at the elite level.
The playgrounds will remain open, as will the places of worship.
• Students are encouraged to travel back to their colleges to study from home.
• All teaching, except that which cannot be done otherwise, must be done remotely.
Valid until February holidays
The closure takes effect immediately and the legal tools to ensure compliance will be developed on Wednesday morning.
It will tentatively run through mid-February, Johnson announced. The time interval can be affected depending on the development aspect.
“If the death toll starts to drop and everyone struggles to follow the restrictions, we can slowly lift the closure and maybe open schools after the February break,” Johnson said.
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have already taken similar steps.
Then the British can leave home:
• If it is not possible to work from home.
• Buy basic goods
• Train with a person, from the home or another person, but not both.
• Offering or caring for a vulnerable person.
• For medical attention or to avoid getting wet at home.
