In China, sampling is now done by people who enter the country from abroad. Since April 1, figures have been published on the number of people who tested positive for the coronavirus without showing any symptoms.
Already on the first day, it turned out that 130 of a total of 166 new cases who tested positive had no symptoms, writes the British Medical Journal, BMJ, which Svenska Dagbladet has noted.
It is a small sample and more data will be available. It is also unclear exactly how these cases have been identified. But let’s say they can be generalized, and even if they’re ten percent wrong, this is because the virus is everywhere, says Tom Jefferson, an epidemiologist and researcher at the Center for Evidence-Based Medicine at Oxford University, at the BMJ .
“The virus has been around for a long time”
Tom Jefferson believes the results are very important and also says that the virus has likely circulated longer than previously thought and that a large part of the population has already been exposed.
The new data goes directly against the opinion of the WHO from the World Health Organization, which stated in a February report: the extent of the infection without symptoms is unknown, but it is probably relatively rare and probably not a decisive cause of the spread.
