The United States has reported an average of 55,000 new corona cases per day this week. That’s a 16 percent increase compared to last week, CNBC reports.
Statistics from Johns Hopkins University show that several of the nation’s states are now in their worst outbreaks since the start of the pandemic. Up to ten states have reached their highest daily figures on Friday.
They are Colorado, Idaho, Indiana, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming, writes CNN.
The fact that the virus is spreading more in rural states is new to the United States. When the first outbreak occurred, it was in New York and other densely populated states in the Northeast. Later, during the summer, new and elevated infections of the so-called sunbelt occurred, with states such as Florida, Arizona and California.
Fauci: “It’s not too late”
The US chief of infection control, Anthony Fauci, has called for new measures to deal with the outbreaks. At the same time, it is opposed to the introduction of new closures.
“It is not too late to introduce good public health measures, and I emphasize once again that this does not necessarily mean closing the country,” Fauci said in an interview with Johns Hopkins University, according to CNBC.
Fauci has previously warned that infection can escalate even further when temperatures drop. This can be especially troublesome when the flu season begins in earnest.
