Thursday’s fire broke out in a duty-free part of Beirut port, about a hundred meters inland from the warehouse with 15 tons of fireworks and 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate that exploded on August 4. The fire spread, among other things, to a warehouse where food aid was stored, to those who were severely affected by the explosion a month ago, the Red Cross reported on Thursday according to AFP.
The event brings fresh memories of last month’s devastating explosions that claimed the lives of at least 190 people. Several thousand were injured, around 300,000 were left homeless, and the ongoing protests against the country’s leadership mark a huge force.
President Michel Aoun called a meeting with Lebanon’s highest security council on Thursday to discuss today’s fire. According to the president, the fire may be the result of intentional sabotage, technical error or negligence.
“It is no longer acceptable for mistakes of any kind to be made leading to a fire of this kind, especially after the disaster caused by the first fire,” wrote Michel Aoun on Twitter.
What caused The latest fire must be cleared up as soon as possible and those responsible held accountable, the president writes.
Lebanon suffered from a deep economic crisis for many years when the pandemic hit and discontent with corruption within the government and parliament was very great. The government resigned, but President Michel Aoun remains.
