A new earthquake with a magnitude of 8.1 has occurred outside New Zealand according to the US Geological Survey.
The New Zealand Emergency Management Agency (Nema) warns of tsunami waves and urges residents on the north coast of the North Island to immediately evacuate and seek refuge in mountainous terrain or inland.
“People evacuating should walk, run or ride a bicycle to reduce the risk of getting caught in traffic,” Nema writes on Twitter.
According to the New Zealand Herald, sirens sound along the affected coastline to warn of the threat of a tsunami.
Third day
The earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 10,000 meters, is today the third in the region.
The first earthquake occurred at 2.30 p.m. Swedish time, and is said to have occurred at a depth of about 10 kilometers. It must have been felt over much of the country, down to Dunedin in the south, about 110 km from there.
The magnitude was initially measured at 7.3, but later dropped to 6.9.
Four aftershocks have been registered, with magnitudes between 5 and 4.5. Social media users describe the tremors as powerful and “terrible.” No damage was reported.
Warning: Stay away from the beach.
Areas located within 300 kilometers of the epicenter of the earthquake are at risk of changing water flows and currents in the future. Even earlier in the day, everyone who lived on the coast in the areas around the earthquake was urged to get up on high ground and stay away from the sea.
