In two weeks, the President of the Polish Parliament must announce a new date for the presidential election.
Poland would have actually held elections on Sunday, but due to the crown pandemic, it was postponed. On Wednesday night, a message came from the leader of the Government and Justice (PIS) party, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, that the presidential elections could not be held on Sunday, either through traditional voting in the polling stations or by postal vote. .
PIS wanted in the last attempt to hold the elections on the designated day, but by postal vote rather than forcing the Poles into the polling stations during the pandemic.
One reason is that current President Andrzej Duda, formally independent but supported by PIS, is leading the way in opinion polls. The PIS hopes that Duda even gets more than 50 percent of the votes in the first round and that a second round is not necessary.
The opposition has complained that it has been practically impossible to carry out electoral campaigns, and that Duda is the only presidential candidate who has been able to travel through Poland and, together with official commitments, hold elections.
Electoral Commission chief Sylwester Marciniak tells TVN24 that he believes the election will take place in late July.
