France, severely affected by the crown, is holding its breath ahead of tonight’s television program. Then President Emmanuel Macron is expected to introduce new restrictions to curb the spread of the infection.

Steeply rising infection rates, medical care on the brink of congestion and the highest number of deaths since April. Macron’s televised address to the nation on Wednesday night takes place against a bleak backdrop.

The president’s message could be bitter medicine, according to a government source. According to various newspapers and radio channels, all of which refer to unidentified sources, Macron is expected to announce a new blockade in four weeks, which would then be subject to a vote in the National Assembly on Thursday.

“Out of control”

In light of the sharp increase in the spread of the infection, which Le Monde described as “out of control,” France now needs “powerful measures that are understandable to all French, probably at the national level,” according to Stanislas Guerini, leader of the Macron’s La République En Marche party. (LREM).

On Tuesday, about 3,000 people received intensive care for covid-19. In total, the country has around 5,800 VAT sites.

Around 19,000 were hospitalized.

Field hospitals and evacuations

When the situation got worse in March and April, France had to install field hospitals and evacuate hundreds of patients to Germany, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Austria. The dire economic consequences that followed the spring closure have meant that the government has long been reluctant to introduce a new one; instead, local night curfews have been introduced in Paris and other cities with a high spread of infection. However, developments in recent days mean that further stricter measures are now expected.

– We must prepare for difficult decisions, says Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin.
