North Macedonia has a new coalition government. The Social Democrats and Prime Minister Zoran Zaev won the elections in mid-July by a narrow margin and on Sunday they also got their governing coalition passed with 62 of 120 votes in parliament.
The coalition includes the largest party representing the Albanian minority in the country.
– There will come a time of order and justice, it is time for a review of the judiciary and impartial legal security, says Zaev.
With the approval of the new coalition, a long period ends when the country has been governed by a transitional government.
In February last year, the Social Democratic government pushed for a national name change to pave the way for EU membership. Greece had demanded a name change so as not to block NATO membership and EU membership negotiations.
But once Macedonia became North Macedonia, it turned out that the road to EU membership was still long. In October 2019, France rejected the start of accession negotiations, prompting the resignation of the Social Democratic government and the announcement of new elections. Only in March of this year did the green light arrive to start the EU negotiations.
Parliamentary elections were supposed to have taken place in April, but were postponed until July as a result of the crown pandemic.
Zaev has promised to address the pandemic and its economic effects, as well as to bring the country closer to EU membership. The right-wing opposition accuses the Social Democrats of corruption and mismanaging both the pandemic and the economy. They also blame the Zaev camp for sacrificing the country’s national identity in the deal with Greece.
