Starting Saturday, foreign nationals who want to travel to Sweden must submit a negative coronavirus test. The test can “as a general rule” take only 48 hours. The rules apply to everyone over the age of 18, with a few exceptions. Exceptions will exist to “not make vaccinations or medical care more difficult,” says Prime Minister Stefan Löfven.
The decision was made at the request of the Swedish Public Health Agency.
Exceptions for those who live in Sweden
The exceptions also apply to border travelers, those living in Sweden, those with urgent family reasons or humanitarian reasons.
– Exceptions differ depending on where you are traveling from. Details will be published on the government website in the afternoon, says Interior Minister Mikael Damberg (S).
Elite athletes also get exceptions to the rules.
– Elite athletes, we believe that it is a category that does work, and then you have to cross the border. They also have great opportunities to try, says Mikael Damberg.
“Totally manageable in the short term”
National Police Chief Anders Thornberg says that due to the new regulations, additional checks will be necessary.
– In general, it can be said that control at certain airports and ferry berths will be more extensive.
Police have requested material from MSB and Anders Thornberg says the longer the pandemic lasts and the temporary entry ban is enforced, the greater the impact it will have on other police assignments.
– In a shorter perspective, we have considered this to be completely manageable, says Anders Thornberg.
The new rules mainly apply until March 31.
