Alexei Navalny is a Russian activist, lawyer and blogger who has become known for his harsh criticism of the country’s government and his work against corruption. He founded the anti-corruption foundation FBK and launched corruption scandals in online videos watched by millions of people.
Initially, he was directly involved in politics within the prevailing system and ran for the post of mayor of Moscow. Doubtful criminal convictions mean that you are no longer allowed to stand for election.
Among other things, he was convicted in 2013 for embezzlement, but the verdict was overturned by the Supreme Court following a critical statement from the Council of Europe on the legal process. After a new trial, he received a suspended sentence of five years.
Instead, his political movement has a strategy of “smart voices.” Their goal is to rally a broad opposition behind individual candidates who are considered to have the best chance of defeating United Russia candidates in one-man constituencies, across the country.
On August 20, 2020, Navalny fell ill during a flight between Siberian Tomsk and Moscow. He was taken to Germany for specialized care and it turned out that he had been poisoned with the neurotoxin novitjok. After a few months, he had recovered.
The 44-year-old man comes from the Moscow region, is married to Ms Julia Navalnaja and has two children.
