Navalny: I’m going back to Russia

Navalny fell ill in August while boarding a plane between Siberian Tomsk and Moscow. He was taken to hospital, but after a few days he was flown to Germany for treatment at the Charité Hospital in Berlin, where it was discovered that he had been poisoned by novitjok.

In his first interview after the poisoning, he now tells the newspaper Der Spiegel about the incident.

The opposition politician says that he is improving day by day and that doctors estimate that he can be restored to 90 percent.

– Maybe even 100 percent, but nobody really knows.

Navalny accuses Russian President Putin for the poisoning.

– I claim that Putin is behind the act and has no other versions of the course of events, he says and believes that it is based on the facts: the nerve agent novitjok.

The order to use the poison can only come from one of the heads of the three security services FSB, GRU or SWR, but in turn they must have received instructions from Putin, he says.

According to sources at Le Monde, Putin, for his part, has raised the possibility that Navalny has poisoned himself. Fire the opposition leader firmly.

The question then is why he was allowed to leave Russia, if Putin was behind the poisoning.

Navalny says he believes Russia was determined not to let him leave the country and that is why they said he could not pay for transportation.

– They were waiting for me to die.

But his wife and others fought for his care abroad and succeeded.

At the same time, he believes that it is important for the “people of Putin” not to receive victim status.

– If he had died in Omsk or received permanent injuries there, it would clearly have been his responsibility. So you might not have been able to prove that he was a novitiate, but that you hadn’t let me leave the country would clearly have been his fault. Furthermore, they waited 48 hours, probably in the hope that it would no longer be possible to taste the poison, he tells Der Spiegel.

Although he says he is sure that President Putin is behind the poisoning, he plans to travel to Russia.

– Not returning means Putin has reached his goal. And my mission now is to be the guy who’s not afraid. And I’m not afraid! If my hands are shaking, it is not because of fear, but because of that, he says, referring to the poison.

The question of whether you are not worried about your family is more difficult to answer.

– Of course I care about my family and the people around me, he tells the newspaper.

Even if he jokes regularly About poisoning, keep hard thoughts. What happens if someone plants poison in your Moscow apartment, where your wife and two children live? He is afraid of being attacked, but believes that everything will get worse in Russia if he does not continue his fight.

– They will kill many more people, they will imprison many more.

When asked if he will change his behavior after the incident, he says:

– I will continue traveling through the regions of Russia, to spend the night in hotels and drink the water that is in the hotel room. What else should I do?

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov rejects Navalny’s comments, calling them an insult.

– We believe that such accusations against the Russian president are completely unfounded and unacceptable, says according to the Russian state news agency Tass.
