Bergstrand first coached Kalmar during the 1998 season. After an excursion to Helsingborg in the early 2000s (when he led the Scanians to the Champions League group stage), he returned to Kalmar and trained at the club. for ten years between 2003 and 2013. After two years at Hammarby, he returned to be Kalmar’s head coach in 2017.

In 2018, Bergstrand was on sick leave for personal reasons, leading to Kalmar legend Henrik Rydström being removed from his own ranks as head coach. Nanne resumed primary responsibility for this season.
