A politician who bears the name of Adolf Hitler won a local election in Namibia.
With 85 percent of the vote, Uunona Adolf Hitler was elected councilor in the city of Ompundja.
But he distances himself from actions committed for his name.
Uunona Adolf Hitler, 54, tells German Bild that his father probably didn’t know what Adolf Hitler really stood for when he chose to name his son after him.
– It does not mean that it wants to oppress the region and it does not mean that it fights for world domination, he tells the newspaper and laughs.
Called Adolf
Uunona Adolf Hitler’s political interest came from rather the opposite direction. She began her career as an anti-apartheid activist and belongs to the Swapo party, which shares that attitude.
– It was a common name for me when I was a child, it wasn’t until I grew up that I knew that this man wanted to oppress the whole world and killed millions of Jews. I don’t want to have anything to do with those things, he says.
In most contexts, Uunona Adolf Hitler is presented only as Uunona Adolf. His wife and friends just call him Adolf, a name not entirely unusual in those parts of Africa that, like Namibia, were colonized by Germany. But sadly, you can’t change your name completely, even if you wanted to now.
– It’s on all official documents now. It’s too late for that, the newly elected local politician tells Bild.
