The head of the Russian security service FSB and two deputy defense ministers are on the EU sanctions list for the poisoning of opposition leader Alexei Navalny. At the same time, “Putin’s chef” is being punished for selling weapons to Libya.

The sanctions take the form of an EU entry ban and the freezing of any assets in the EU and were made official on Thursday.

Navalny’s list includes Aleksandr Bortnikov, head of the powerful FSB security service, formerly known as the KGB.

“Given that Alexei Navalny was under surveillance when he was poisoned, it is reasonable to conclude that the poisoning could only be carried out with the involvement of the Federal Security Service,” said the justification of the EU countries for the sanctions.

Close to Putin

The list also includes two deputy defense ministers, Alexei Krivoruchko and Pavel Popov, as well as two of President Vladimir Putin’s closest men, Deputy Chief of Staff Sergei Kiriyenko and Andrei Jarin, Putin’s head of domestic policy directorate. The list also includes the representative of the president of the Siberian federal district, Sergei Menjajlo, as well as the state research institute responsible for the destruction of chemical weapons.

The sanctions are introduced within the framework of the EU sanctions against individuals and organizations that are considered to be in violation of the chemical weapons ban.

– It is good that the EU has now jointly condemned the assassination attempt on Alexei Navalny, declared Prime Minister Stefan Löfven (S) at a press conference ahead of the summit of EU countries in Brussels on Thursday.

Putin cook

The same sanctions in the form of a visa ban and EU frozen assets are also being targeted at businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin, often referred to as “Putin’s chef”, as some of his companies have dealt with dinners and visits. to the Kremlin. However, the sanctions against him refer to violations of the UN arms embargo in Libya.

EU sanctions are also copied by the UK.
