The ugliest building in Sweden has been named.
The Arkitekturupproret association has named the Stockholm School of Architecture the ugliest building in Sweden in a vote.
– It’s ready for demolition, you should build something beautiful there instead, says Sigvard Freylander, President of Architecture Uprising.
He says that the buildings that have been voted the ugliest buildings in Sweden have one thing in common: they are built in a modernist spirit.
– Since 1930, when modernism broke into Sweden, everything that is built in Sweden is in that spirit. It is more or less forbidden to build otherwise, says Sigvard Freylander.
According to the association, 50,000 people have voted for the Östermalmsgatan School of Architecture in Stockholm as the ugliest building in Sweden. Sigvard Freylander thinks it’s because he’s exceptionally brutal.
– It’s so simple, jarring and asymmetrical. That’s exactly what architects like, says Sigvard Freylander.
The winner of the contest will receive a demolition grant as a Christmas gift. Members of the Architecture Uprising are prepared to raise funds that can sponsor the demolition of the School of Architecture.
-More than five decades ago and is ready to be demolished, even the modernists themselves believe it, he says.
Sigvard Freylander would like something beautiful to be built on the site.
– It is well located, next to one of the most beautiful streets in Stockholm: Danderydsgatan.
Other buildings on the list of the ten ugliest buildings in the country include Domkyrkoforum in Lund, Townhouse Japan in Landskrona, and Skatteskrapan in Sundsvall.
