The approximately 10-foot-tall silver metal object was discovered Nov. 18 by rangers in the Utah desert. The find received a lot of media attention and soon curious people began searching for the place, despite the advice of the authorities.
But now the US agency Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announces that the monolith has disappeared.
“We have received credible reports that the illegally installed structure, known as the ‘monolith,’ has been moved by an unknown party,” the authority wrote in a statement.
The authority itself says that they have not been involved in the transfer. Since the monolith is considered private property, the incident is not being investigated by BLM, but by local police.

How the monolith ended up in the Utah desert and who walked it is still unknown. However, many have noted that the find is similar to the work of artist John McCracken, who lived in the neighboring state of New Mexico. However, McCracken died in 2011. Others have pointed out the similarity between the find and the extraterrestrial monoliths featured in film director Stanley Kubrick’s sci-fi classic “2001: A Space Adventure” from 1968.
A monolith is a larger object made from a solid piece of stone or other hard material. Norse runestones are examples of monoliths.
