It was 10:30 p.m. when the light must have been seen. The light was observed at various meteorite camera stations in Uppsala, Örebro and Borlänge, among other places.
– We have also received reports that you have heard some kind of explosion or roar, says Linnea Rehn, a meteorologist at SMHI.
Many individuals also noticed the different phenomenon, which was no less seen on social media. In Uppsala, Tierp and Enköping, among others, local Facebook groups were all the rage.
A racing car?
What was it then? SMHI and Uppsala University claim this may be property.
– A fireball is when a meteor enters the atmosphere and burns. It may explain the bright glow, says Linnea Rehn.
– I’m pretty sure it’s a bolid, says Eric Stempels from Uppsala University, who is a researcher in physics and astronomy.
“As big as a soccer ball”
According to Stempels, the space stone does not have to be very large.
– I guess it’s the size of a soccer ball. The speed at which it travels is one hundred times faster than that of an airplane. This means that braking generates a lot of heat and then turns into a strong light.
How common is this?
– This happens all the time all over the world. In Sweden, it is estimated that you would say that it occurs more than ten times a year.
