The national celebrity became a threat

The now-known musk ox Brutus was so close that it was considered to pose a threat to humans. Then the police withdrew, reports SVT Nyheter Jämtland.
– You have to be careful with musk oxen, they can run very fast and get quite angry, says Tom Arnbom, a nature conservation expert at the World Wildlife Fund.
The musk ox Brutus has kept the villagers in and around Svenstavik in full swing after he suddenly appeared in late August and began wandering through people’s schools and gardens.
Carl Eldebro is one of those who received an unexpected visit from Brutus. He previously told Aftonbladet how the musk ox, among other things, broke his sundial.
“I would be scared”
Now Brutus must have been making new jokes. This week, the police had to launch an operation to drive him away from a village in Oviken, reports SVT Nyheter Jämtland.
The musk ox must have been too close and then posed a danger to humans.
– We judge that you would be intimidated. During the actual scare, he showed no aggression, says Martin Trostemo, game coordinator in Jämtland Police for SVT Nyheter Jämtland.

Expert warning: they are small but compact
Tom Arnbom, a nature conservation expert at the World Wide Fund for Nature, urges everyone to try to stay away from Brutus.
– Be careful with musk oxen. They are relatively small, like a small cow, but very compact. You always keep a safe distance of 40-50 meters because they can run very fast and can get quite angry, he says.
If you end up too close to a musk ox, it can go really bad, according to Tom Arnbom.
– They have horns and are extra thick on the head because they are stabbed and fight each other properly. If you get bitten by a musk ox, it’s not fun.

Can be killed
Brutu’s future is uncertain. The nature conservation association in Härjedalen wanted to put him to sleep and then move him home with the herd of musk oxen in the mountains, but the county administrative board rejected his request. The reason was that it seemed that Brutus was beginning to move home voluntarily.
If the musk ox injures someone or if there is a great risk of it happening, the police see killing as an alternative.
– We want in every way to find another more satisfactory solution. But a last resort is that we, with the support of the legislation, are forced to kill him, Martin Trostemo tells SVT Nyheter Jämtland.
