One of the targeted hacker groups, Russia’s Strontium, is said to have attempted to influence the 2016 US elections. Robert Mueller stated in his report that it was the group that was largely behind the attacks on Democrats and their then-candidate. Hillary Clinton.
Now, the computer giant Microsoft is alerting the same group, and others in China and Iran, that they have intensified their attacks, both against the campaigns of Joe Bidens and Donald Trump.
“It is clear that foreign groups have stepped up their efforts towards the 2020 elections, which have been predicted and in line with what the US government and others have reported.“, Microsoft writes in a press release.
Hacker attacks on Biden and Trump
Strontium is said to have targeted at least 200 organizations, several of which are linked to either the Biden or Trump campaign. They are also said to have targeted British parties, but who they are is unclear.
At the same time, Chinese hackers have carried out hacker attacks against people linked to the Biden campaign, while Iranian hackers have targeted people linked to the Trump campaign. Between May and June, Iran’s Phosphorus group will try to access accounts linked to people in the White House.
According to Microsoft, most of the attacks have failed and so far no one has targeted groups that run the voting system in the upcoming elections.
