Relatives of Breonna Taylor, a black woman who was shot and killed by police earlier this year, have reached an agreement. The family receives twelve million dollars, just over 105 million Swedish crowns, in exchange for dropping their lawsuit against the city of Louisville in Kentucky. They have also received promises of reforms within the local police.
– Although this day is significant, it is only the beginning to obtain complete justice for Breonna, says her mother Tamika Palmer.
She says it is time to proceed with the prosecution against the police involved.
Breonna Taylor, 26, was shot and killed in March at her home while she was sleeping. Three plainclothes policemen entered the apartment and an altercation broke out between her boyfriend and the police. The boyfriend says he thought it was a robbery and that he shot in self-defense. Breonna Taylor was hit by eight police bullets and died. A policeman was also injured.
One of the three policemen has been fired and the other two are suspended. A criminal investigation into the fatal shooting is underway, but no charges have been filed so far.
